C-312National Renewable Energy Strategy Act
An Act respecting the development of a national renewable energy strategy
Private member's bill, introduced in the House of Commons on February 1, 2023
- Status
- At second reading in the House of Commons since February 1, 2023
What it does
Requires a national plan to make all electricity generated in Canada come from renewable sources by December 31, 2030.
What it does
- Requires the Minister of Natural Resources to work with provincial energy officials and Indigenous governing bodies to develop and carry out a national renewable energy strategy.
- Sets goals for the strategy, including starting twice as many renewable energy projects as non-renewable ones each year, increasing research spending, and creating more renewable energy jobs.
- Calls for cooperation between the federal and provincial governments to create new large-scale public electric utilities.
- Requires the Minister and the Minister of Finance to design and put in place incentives within one year for solar, wind, tidal, and biomass projects, and for home and business retrofits that use more renewable energy.
- Limits those incentives to start-up costs for new projects, not ongoing costs.
- Requires a report on the strategy within two years, and further reports every three years after that, to be tabled in Parliament and posted online.
