What it does

Amalgamates the Ottawa and Alexandria-Cornwall Roman Catholic corporations into one new Ottawa-Cornwall corporation.

What it does

  • Creates The Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Ottawa-Cornwall by merging the Ottawa corporation and the Alexandria-Cornwall corporation.
  • Transfers the property, debts, claims, rights, privileges, and legal proceedings of both corporations to the new corporation.
  • Sets the new corporation up as a not-for-profit body, with the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ottawa-Cornwall as its sole member.
  • Requires the Archbishop to get written consent from one diocesan clergy member and one lay person before dealing with the corporation’s real property.
  • Deems the Alexandria-Cornwall corporation to have applied for, and received, continuance under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act on royal assent, and repeals the 1884 federal Act for the Ottawa diocese.

Background

The bill deals with two existing corporations, one incorporated by a federal Act in 1884 and the other by Ontario legislation in 1891, later amended in 1977. It also treats the Alexandria-Cornwall corporation as having applied for continuance under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act.
